Three Killed In Newly-Built Bridge Collapse In China

(RTTNews) - A new bridge built less than an year ago in China's north-eastern Heilongjiang province collapsed early on Friday killing three people and injuring another five.

Chinese media reported that a roughly 120-meter section of the bridge at Harbin caved in with four trucks.

The 15-kilometer bridge spanning over land and the Songhua River was built in two years at a cost of about $290 million. Comments on Chinese Internet sites blamed shoddy construction work and corrupt bureaucrats for collapse of the bridge which was opened for traffic only in November last.

A Chinese government official in charge of safety management has promised a full investigation, acknowledging that a bridge built less than an year ago should not collapse.
