India Searches Detained North Korean Ship For Nuclear Materials

(RTTNews) - Indian scientists and police on Monday carried out extensive search operations for nuclear materials on board a North Korean ship, which India seized last week, said officials on Monday.

Indian officials said that they have not found any nuclear material in the search operations so far, but added that the North Korean vessel would be released only after the experts are satisfied there is nothing wrong with the consignment.

According to Indian officials, the North Korean vessel appeared to be carrying a consignment of sugar. They are presently waiting for the arrival of Korean translators for further questioning of the crew to find out the source and destination of the cargo.

Indian authorities had seized MV Mu San on Friday after it anchored in Indian waters without authorization. India's coastguard chased down the vessel and escorted to a port in the Bay of Bengal for conducting extensive search operations for nuclear materials, as directed by a UN resolution passed in June.

The UN Security Council had passed a new resolution in June, imposing tougher new sanctions on North Korea over its recent nuclear tests and missile launches. The move came after North Korea defied previous UN resolutions by conducting a nuclear test on 25th May and test-firing several missiles.

The latest UN sanctions imposed on North Korea are tougher than the ones already in place against the communist Korean country, and they include provisions for the inspection of North Korean ships in ports and on the high seas, a tighter ban on arms exports, and curbs loans and money transfers to North Korea.

Earlier, North Korea had pulled out of the six-nation negotiations on its disputed nuclear program in April after the UN Security Council adopted a declaration condemning Pyongyang for launching a rocket on 5th April and imposed sanctions on three North Korean firms.

Though North Korea insisted that it launched only a communications satellite, the U.S, Japan and South Korea believe that Pyongyang test-fired a long-range missile under the pretext of launching a satellite into space.

Since April, North Korea has expelled U.S. nuclear experts and IAEA inspectors monitoring the dismantling of North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear complex from the country, conducted a nuclear test and test-fired several ballistic missiles.

The latest UN sanctions are seen as an effort by the international community to drag North Korea back to the stalled six nation talks on Pyongyang's disputed nuclear program. North Korea, however, responded to the latest UN sanctions by threatening war and pledging to expand its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

North Korea had agreed in 2007 to roll back its disputed nuclear program in exchange for aid during an earlier round of the six nation talks in Beijing, involving the two Koreas, the U.S., the UK, Russia and China. But the nuclear disarmament process was stalled again in December after negotiators failed to reach an agreement on the means of verifying Pyongyang's account of its disputed nuclear program.
