Ind. jobless rate drops to lowest level since 2008

(AP:INDIANAPOLIS) Indiana's unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent in February, marking the first time since December 2008 that the jobless rate has dipped below 9 percent.

Figures released Friday also show that Indiana had a lower unemployment rate last month than all its neighboring states.

Total non-farm employment declined in February, but some areas showed employment gains, including construction and private education and health services.

Indiana Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Mark Everson says new claims for unemployment benefits are at the lowest level since 2006. The statewide unemployment rate peaked at 10.6 percent in June 2009.

The national unemployment rate was 8.9 percent for February.
