Environmentalists urge 40 pct EU emissions cut70 days ago
(AP:BRUSSELS) The environmental group Friends of the Earth Europe says if more Europeans used public transport instead of cars that could help the European Union double its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
The EU is promising to cut emissions by 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020. The 27-nation bloc also says it could step that up to 30 percent if it strikes an ambitious pact to curb global warming at U.N talks in Copenhagen beginning Dec. 7.
The environmental group says Europe could make a 40 percent emissions cut if it radically improved energy efficiency and made a major shift to renewable energy.
It says many Europeans would have to make lifestyle changes, with people taking public transport for less than half of all their trips _ instead of three-quarters at present.
