China wants an economically independent Africa

(AP:SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt) China says Beijing's growing trade relationship and investment in Africa is aimed at helping the continent achieve economic independence.

Commerce Minister Chen Deming says the investments are part of an effort to help African nations improve their people's livelihood.

Chen's remarks on Monday at a China-Africa summit in Egypt come a day after Premier Wen Jiabao pledged $10 billion in new, easy-term loans to Africa.

Wen also dismissed as "untenable" criticism that his country was merely looking to plunder Africa's resources in its bid to fuel its growing economy.

The summit is scheduled to end Monday with the signing of a new cooperation agreement.
