Spain's jobless claims rise in October18 days ago
(AP:MADRID) The number of people seeking unemployment benefits in Spain rose by a further 98,906 in October despite signs that the recession is easing, the Labor Ministry said Tuesday.
Over the past year, jobless claims have increased by 990,327 to 3.8 million.
Maravillas Rojo, secretary general at the Labor Ministry, said the 2.6 percent increase between September and October was in line with expectations but pointed out that it was half the 192,658 spike in October 2008.
"Although the October figures are negative, the monthly inter-annual variations have been declining since March," she said in a statement.
"There are signs of economic recovery, which makes us think that the recession has reached its limits," added Rojo.
It was the third monthly increase in a row after claims numbers had dropped for three straight months over the summer period.
In two years, Spain has swung from being Europe's top job creator to having the region's highest unemployment rate _ 17.9 percent at the end of the third quarter _ partly because of the collapse of its construction industry.
