Court says Athens bus strike abusive, illegal

(AP:ATHENS, Greece) A lower Athens court has ruled that a bus worker strike is illegal, opening the door for the government to force them to return to work.

The strike, which began on Friday, was scheduled initially to run through the weekend. Late Saturday, the two drivers' unions decided to prolong the strike until Tuesday.

The Athens subway and tramway had also been on strike, but the government forced them back to work after nine days Friday by threatening layoffs if they did not obey.

Transport workers object to imminent pay cuts. Their salaries will be aligned to those of civil servants as part of the government's austerity measures.

Unions say they plan to appeal the court's decision.
