Alpha Natural Resources Inc. rose 12.1 percent to $8.23 with 41,421,000 shares traded.

American International Group rose 1.9 percent to $34.44 with 42,274,800 shares traded.

Bank of America Corp. rose 4.8 percent to $9.40 with 326,299,500 shares traded.

Citigroup Inc. rose 4.2 percent to $34.45 with 61,139,400 shares traded.

Ford Motor Co. rose 1.3 percent to $10.34 with 50,640,700 shares traded.

General Electric Co. rose .6 percent to $22.02 with 104,343,500 shares traded.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. rose 3.7 percent to $41.40 with 46,587,300 shares traded.

Morgan Stanley rose 2.8 percent to $17.90 with 39,487,600 shares traded.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 2.0 percent to $5.20 with 49,362,200 shares traded.
