Boost in SD newspaper rates for legal ads dropped

(AP:PIERRE, S.D.) South Dakota newspapers have dropped their request for a 3 percent increase in the rates that cities, counties, school districts and other government bodies pay to print their minutes and other legal notices.

A legislative committee last month refused to approve the increase and instead asked the state Bureau of Administration to present more information to justify the increase.

The legislative committee did not discuss the issue Wednesday because the Bureau of Administration withdrew the proposal at the request of the South Dakota Newspaper Association.

Dave Bordewyk, general manager of the South Dakota Newspaper Association, says it was apparent the proposed increase would not be approved by the legislative committee. He says he doesn't know if the association will propose an increase in the next year or two.
