NYC aims to lure more tourists from Mexico

(AP:NEW YORK) New York City is making a push to court Mexican travelers.

The city's tourism arm, NYC & Co., announced Tuesday it's ramping up its presence in Mexico City. That's part of its series of far-flung tourism offices.

NYC & Co. says the number of Mexicans visiting the city nearly doubled in six years, to 376,000 last year.

That's a relatively small piece of the nearly 51 million tourists last year, but it's part of a growing effort to lure Latin American visitors.

The agency has had a consultant in Mexico City. The new office represents a significant boost.

NYC & Co. says "investing millions of dollars in marketing and advertising assets," but that doesn't mean cash. It includes such items as arranging to trade outdoor advertising with other cities.
