RI collects $2.7M during tax amnesty program

(AP:PROVIDENCE, R.I.) A tax amnesty program in Rhode Island targeting those who are behind on their state taxes has brought in $2.7 million in its first three weeks.

The state Division of Taxation said Monday it has received 725 applications since the Sept. 2 start of the program. It runs through Nov. 15.

Under the program, penalties are waived for those who submit past-due returns with their taxes owed. Interest on the owed amount is reduced by 25 percent. The state also agrees not to pursue civil or criminal actions and is allowing taxpayers to renew any licenses that have lapsed.

State Tax Administrator David Sullivan says he is extremely pleased with the results so far. He urges anyone who owes back taxes to file an application.
