NH utility using technology to seek problems

(AP:HAMPTON, N.H.) A New Hampshire utility is in the process of checking its electrical distribution system for potential problems using infrared technology.
Unitil is using the infrared technology to view all its distribution lines in the state.
Unitil spokesman Alec O'Meara says that if a piece of electric equipment is starting to degrade or corrode it will give off more heat. The infrared technology should be able to detect the difference in heat so problem areas can be fixed before they fail or cause other problems.
The inspection process began Sept. 6.
O'Meara says the utility wants people to know about the program so that if they see a slow-moving Unitil vehicle they will be aware it's not out of the ordinary.
Unitil provides electricity to 101,400 New Hampshire electric customers.
