Alpha Natural Resources Inc. rose 16.8 percent to $6.90 with 37,587,000 shares traded.

Bank of America Corp. rose 5.4 percent to $8.80 with 224,027,200 shares traded.

Citigroup Inc. rose 3.1 percent to $32.07 with 51,107,500 shares traded.

Ford Motor Co. rose 2.3 percent to $10.14 with 59,694,900 shares traded.

Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. rose 8.5 percent to $39.43 with 38,920,800 shares traded.

General Electric Co. rose 1.3 percent to $21.59 with 35,538,400 shares traded.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. rose 1.6 percent to $39.30 with 27,542,800 shares traded.

Morgan Stanley rose 5.1 percent to $17.08 with 37,627,900 shares traded.
