Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $.68 or .9 percent, to $77.88.

Covidien rose $.41 or .7 percent, to $57.14.

Patterson fell $.17 or .5 percent, to $34.24.

PerkinElmer rose $.26 or .9 percent, to $28.55.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.70 or 1.2 percent, to $58.93.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $.40 or .7 percent, to $59.90.

Waters rose $1.51 or 1.8 percent, to $83.18.
