Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $.17 or .2 percent, to $75.98.

Covidien rose $.21 or .4 percent, to $56.05.

Patterson fell $.06 or .2 percent, to $33.97.

PerkinElmer rose $.35 or 1.3 percent, to $27.30.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.37 or .6 percent, to $57.35.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. rose $.05 or .1 percent, to $58.79.

Waters rose $1.10 or 1.4 percent, to $80.19.
