AA recalls last of TWA attendants 11 years on

(AP:ST. LOUIS) More than 200 former Trans World Airlines flight attendants are getting their jobs back nearly 11 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that stymied the airline industry.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat from Missouri, said Thursday she brokered the deal with American Airlines to bring back 211 TWA flight attendants effective Nov. 17.

Just months before 9/11, American Airlines purchased St. Louis-based TWA. American cut 2,500 attendants in the industry slowdown that came in the wake of the attacks. The TWA workers, who lost their seniority in the takeover, were the first to go.

American Airlines is in bankruptcy protection and has offered buyouts to hundreds of flight attendants. A spokesman says the recall will ensure adequate staffing through that process
