Web comic helps fuel donations to Tesla's NY lab

(AP:SHOREHAM, N.Y.) Support from a popular Web cartoonist is re-energizing a decades-long effort to restore a decrepit, 110-year-old old laboratory once used by visionary scientist Nikola Tesla.
In little more than a week, tens of thousands of donors from more than 100 countries have kicked more than $1 million online to pay for the restoration of Tesla's Wardenclyffe laboratory on Long Island, about 65 miles east of New York City.
Cartoonist Matthew Inman, who runs theoatmeal.com, stepped in this month and urged readers to back the project. The original goal was $850,000, but Inman tells The Associated Press the funds keep pouring in.
He says organizers may not only be able to buy the $1.6 million property, but have enough left over to start work on a museum and science center.
