Fight over Mexican telecom frequencies turns ugly
301 days ago
(AP:MEXICO CITY) A fight over hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of frequencies used by next-generation wireless devices has erupted into an ugly feud between the Mexican government and one of its most powerful media companies.
The head of broadcaster MVS Communications and some of the top officials in President Felipe Calderon's administration accused each other Wednesday of lying about the reasons the government is withdrawing MVS's concession on frequencies in the 2.5-gigahertz bandwidth.
The bandwidth works with fourth-generation mobile devices, which are just starting to arrive in Mexico. They can receive data at speeds faster than most current wired Internet connections.
MVS's chairman says the government is taking revenge for one of its journalist's treatment of Calderon. The government says MVS is lying because it's losing a business dispute.
