Becton, Dickinson & Co. rose $.66 or .9 percent, to $76.55.

Covidien fell $.32 or .6 percent, to $57.27.

Patterson rose $.22 or .6 percent, to $36.13.

PerkinElmer rose $.07 or .3 percent, to $27.37.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. rose $.06 or .1 percent, to $56.61.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. fell $.32 or .5 percent, to $58.98.

Waters fell $.91 or 1.2 percent, to $75.26.
