UK decision on hacker extradition to US by October

(AP:LONDON) British authorities say they will decide by mid-October whether to extradite a man to the United States to face computer hacking charges.

A representative for Home Secretary Theresa May told a court Tuesday that she plans to announce the decision on or about Oct. 16.

Gary McKinnon has admitted breaking into U.S. military computers following the Sept. 11 attacks. His extradition case has dragged on for years over questions about his mental health and the fairness of the request.

The 46-year-old's mother, Janis Sharp, has urged May "to show a little bit of compassion" and announce the decision sooner.

Speaking outside court, the mother said the delay was "morally wrong."

McKinnon could face a jail sentence of up to 60 years if convicted of the U.S. charges.
