Ore. ice cream plant closing, layoffs for 75-plus

(AP:SALEM, Ore.) The owners of a nearly century-old ice cream plant are planning to shut it down, saying its age and location in downtown Salem, Ore., make it too difficult and costly to upgrade.

Foster Farms Dairy owns the business best known as Deluxe Ice Cream. Company spokesman John Segale says layoffs of about 75 full-time employees and 25 seasonal workers likely will begin around Oct. 1.

Founded in 1913 as Salem Sanitary Milk, Deluxe Ice Cream changed its name in 1936 as it focused on ice cream production.

Foster Farms Dairy acquired the plant in 2010.
