(AP:NEW YORK) U.S. stocks are sharply lower as fear surges over the European debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average is down more than 200 points.
In the opening minutes of trading, the Dow is off 216 at 12,606. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 21 at 1,341. The Nasdaq composite index is off 63 at 2,861.
Strong selling has also rattled European markets because of fear that Spain will need a sovereign bailout. The main stock indexes are down more than 7 percent in Greeece, 3 percent in Spain and Germany and more than 2 percent in France and Britain.
In the U.S., bank stocks are among the hardest hit. Citigroup has fallen more than 2 percent.
