Vattenfall submits application for new reactors

(AP:STOCKHOLM) The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority says it has received an application by state-owned utility Vattenfall to replace up to two of its nuclear reactors.

The authority, which regulates Sweden's 10 existing reactors, said it received the application on Tuesday.

In 2009, Sweden's center-right government abandoned its policy to slowly end its production of nuclear power. It claimed there were not enough green energy alternatives to replace nuclear power, which accounts for about 40 percent of domestic electricity production.

Based on the regulator's response to the application, Vattenfall will decide whether to invest further in nuclear energy. The regulator will draw up reactor replacement guidelines, which are expected in 2014-2015.
