Covidien rose $.29 or .5 percent, to $55.82.

Patterson fell $.22 or .6 percent, to $35.02.

PerkinElmer fell $.23 or .9 percent, to $25.51.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. fell $.27 or .5 percent, to $55.83.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. fell $.80 or 1.4 percent, to $54.76.

Waters fell $.87 or 1.1 percent, to $78.19.
