Ohio House panel plans August hearings on pensions

(AP:COLUMBUS, Ohio) The chairman of an Ohio House panel has scheduled a string of hearings next month on the fiscal health of the state's five public retirement funds.

State Rep. Kirk Schuring says the goal is to have the House vote on pension legislation sometime in September.

The state Senate has passed a package of bills aimed at shoring up the funds, but House leaders delayed acting on the measures as they awaited a study released earlier in July.

The pending pension bills include requests by the funds to raise premiums, lower payouts and tighten eligibility requirements for affected teachers, police and other public workers in order to keep funds serving 1.7 million Ohioans solvent.

House and Senate leaders have cancelled voting session days that were tentatively scheduled for this week.
