DJ UPDATE: Zambia Zesco Imports Equipment To Ease Power Shortage-Official71 days ago
(Adds government comment, disruption of the equipment)
Zambia's state power utility Zambia Electricity Supply Corp. has imported equipment to replace items damaged in June by fire at the country's largest substation, in a bid to ease the present power shortage, a senior manager in charge of marketing and communications said Monday.
The equipment, worth $4 million, has arrived from India at the South African port of Durban and is expected to reach the country in the next few days, Lucy Zimba told Dow Jones Newswires.
"We will start replacing the damaged generators, which will likely take 15-20 days," she said, adding that the repairs would stabilize power supply in Lusaka and the Copper Belt, home to the country's vast copper and cobalt mines.
However, an official with the state-run Energy Regulatory Board said that the transportation of the equipment from Durban to landlocked Zambia had been hampered by road works in South Africa ahead of next year's world cup championships.
"Heavy trucks carrying the equipment are restricted to move at night most of the time due to the ongoing road works," he said adding that the equipment is expected to be delayed for almost a week.
The Leopold power station was gutted in June, plunging the country into a complete blackout for days. The power station supplies Lusaka and the Copper Belt province.
It also stalled mining operations in the Copper Belt and in North Western province, although Zesco imported emergency power for mines in the Belt; mines in the province aren't connected to the regional grid and suffered from power failure for longer.
According to Zimba, a 165-megawatt generation unit at the country's largest hydropower station--Kafue Gorge--which broke down early this month, is also yet to restart output, and this has worsened the shortage.
However, she said Zesco continues to ensure copper mines receive uninterrupted power supply due to their strategic importance to the Zambian economy.
Copper mines account for a bulk of power consumption in Zambia, Africa's largest copper producer.
