DJ Thai Sugar Board: 8 Millers To Start Crushing By End Of Week75 days ago
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Eight Thai sugar millers would have started crushing by the end of this week, said an official at the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board Thursday.
Apichin Jotikasthira, director of Cane Sugar and Related Industry Bureau under the sugar board, also said the bureau has kept unchanged its earlier sugar cane output forecast of 71.6 million metric tons for the 2009-10 crop year, which began Oct. 1.
Thailand, Asia's largest sugar exporter and the world's No. 2 exporter after Brazil, started crushing the new crop since last Friday.
Its 2008-09 cane output totaled 67 million tons, down from 73 million tons a year earlier.
"Industry participants are talking about a higher yield this year, after crushing started last Friday, but they also said total output could fall below the sugar board's estimate to 70 million-71 million tons," said an executive at a sugar miller in Thailand.
Thailand exports most of its sugar output, supplying the Middle East, Indonesia, South Korea and Pakistan, and this year to India too due to a severe domestic shortfall.
