SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--Contract negotiations have started at the Altonorte copper smelter in northern Chile, owned by international mining company Xstrata PLC (XTA.LN), a union leader said Tuesday.
STORIES OF INTEREST:
Vedanta Resources Plc (VED.LN), the losing bidder for Asarco LLC, is asking the Arizona mining company to return a $50 million deposit and cover its legal fees steaming from a more-than-year-long bidding war.
Zambia's largest copper miner, Konkola Copper Mines, announced Tuesday that it is committed to improving the working conditions of its miners as talks for a new labor deal opened.
MARKETS:
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Copper futures eased slightly Tuesday as U.S. economic data pointed to a slower economic recovery, inventories of the metal continued to rise, participants booked profits from the previous day's rally and the U.S. dollar steadied.
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Base metals ended lower Tuesday on the London Metal Exchange, dragged down by a stronger dollar and losses across global equity markets.
