DJ BASE METALS HIGHLIGHTS: Top Stories Of The Day

LUSAKA, Zambia (AFP)--Zambia will face increased power cuts next year due to high demand for electricity created by investments in the country's mining industry, the state-owned energy supplier said on Monday.

SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--The refined copper market was in a 150,000 metric tons surplus during August based on a fall in apparent demand in China and the European Union, the International Copper Study Group said Monday.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Gold surged to a record high Monday, as investors sought insurance against a sliding dollar and the risk of inflationary bubbles in other assets.

SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--Abiding by Chilean labor laws, striking workers at the Spence copper mine will likely return to work on Wednesday after reaching a wage and benefits deal that ended their 42-day strike, a union leader said Monday.

Zambia's largest copper miner, Konkola Copper Mines, will resume labor talks with its miners Tuesday following the return of a calmer atmosphere at its operations after strike action early this month, a union official told Dow Jones Newswires Monday.

Copper futures hit their highest level in more than a year Monday in response to dollar weakness and equity strength, although the metal pared its gains as some traders unwound long positions in order to book profits.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--A weaker dollar and rising equity markets lifted base metals higher Monday, led by copper's rally to a 14-month high.
