DJ India Govt Agrees To Amend Sugar Cane Pricing -Opposition Member

NEW DELHI (Dow Jones)--India's federal government has agreed to amend a proposed new law on sugar cane pricing which had sparked protests by farmers and stalled proceedings in parliament, a senior opposition party member told reporters Friday.

Gurudas Dasgupta, a leader of Communist Party of India (M), said the government had agreed to amend the law after a meeting with members of various political parties.

On Thursday, thousands of farmers staged a protest in New Delhi demanding more than the proposed increase in sugar cane prices under the new law and opposition party members had backed them.

India is the world's largest sugar consumer. It has been forced to import sugar following a shortfall in domestic production.
