DJ Peru Group:Chile Would Lose Any Trade War If Spat Intensifies

AREQUIPA (Dow Jones)--Chile would lose any trade war with Peru if a current diplomatic spat turns more serious, the president of the Peruvian Association of Exporters said Thursday.

News that a Peruvian Air Force official allegedly passed intelligence to foreign agents has caused a diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

Some Peruvian opposition leaders have called for Peru to cancel its trade deal with Chile.

"Most of what Peru exports to Chile is copper, molybdenum and things like that, while what Chile exports to us is mainly manufactured products, those intensive in labor," Jose Luis Silva told reporters on the sideline of a business conference.

"The country that would be most affected by any trade actions would be Chile. I think that the Chilean government should look over the matter carefully," he said. "The products that Peru sends to Chile could very easily find other markets."

So far, the Peruvian government has ruled out taking any action on the economic front in response to the spy scandal.
