Colombia's Fedecafe Cuts 2009 Coffee Crop Size To 8.3 Mln Bags

CARTAGENA, Colombia (Dow Jones)--Colombian coffee production in the calendar year 2009 is now seen falling to 8.3 million 60-kilogram bags, the head of Colombia's National Federation of Coffee Growers, or Fedecafe, said Friday.

Fedecafe General Manager Luis Genaro Munoz, speaking at the annual Asoexport congress here, said severe weather problems, reduced inputs such as fertilizer use and an ongoing renovation plan had made previous targets impossible to reach.

Earlier Friday, Munoz told Dow Jones Newswires that Fedecafe planned to cut its forecast for the volume of production in 2009 after hopes had faded for a recovery with the onset of the new harvest in the last quarter of the year.

This was the fifth time since the beginning of the year that Fedecafe has lowered its forecast for production in the current calendar year, as Colombian producers harvest one of the smallest coffee crops in over 30 years.

The new figure for this year's production compares with output of 11.487 million bags in 2008 and is down 25% from 12.607 million bags in 2007. It is in line with Munoz's comments earlier Friday when he said Fedecafe was working with an estimate within the range set by leading private exporters at between 8.0 million and 8.7 million bags. The figure has a 5% margin of error, he added.

Munoz said that Colombia's coffee industry maintains the potential to produce over 11 million bags and Fedecafe remains hopeful that the output numbers "in the next few months" would start to show signs of recovery.

The sharp decline, which mostly is attributed to bad weather, represents a drop in production by up to 3.8 million bags from the initial forecast issued in December of 12.1 million bags.
