Colombia Asoexport Sees 2009-10 Coffee Production At 10M Bags14 days ago
CARTAGENA, Colombia (Dow Jones)--Colombian coffee production in the 2009-10 crop cycle is forecast to reach 10 million 60-kilogram bags, Colombia's National Coffee Exporters Association, Asoexport, said Friday.
Mauricio Bernal, president of the board of directors of Asoexport, said this represented an important recovery from the recently completed 2008-09 harvest that ended at 8.6 million bags.
But the Asoexport figure is sharply lower than the forecast issued by Colombia's National Federation of Coffee Growers, or Fedecafe, which last month said production is expected to rebound to 11 million bags in the calendar-year 2010. The Fedecafe calendar-year figure for 2010 is mostly based on production from the 2009-10 crop cycle, which runs from Oct. 1 through September the following year.
"We could see a recovery with the mitaca next year, but to be prudent, we are working with a figure for production in the 2009-10 cycle of 10 million bags," Bernal told the annual Asoexport congress here.
He said erratic weather patterns are still causing multiple problems for Colombian coffee producers and that it would be "several years" before Colombia would return to production volumes above 12 million bags.
