Congo Gecamines Suspends Executives For Mismanagement-UN Radio18 days ago

Congo's state mining company, Gecamines, has suspended at least 18 company executives, accusing them of mismanagement and misappropriation of company funds accruing from the sale of minerals, U.N.-sponsored Radio Okapi reports Tuesday.
Richard Kabamba, the Gecamines Board president, told Okapi that the executives had been relieved of their duties to pave the way for thorough investigations into mismanagement of company finances that cost Gecamines several millions of dollars in 2008. However, he couldn't reveal the exact amount lost.
In its heyday, Gecamines was a leading copper and cobalt producer in Africa, before years of instability and lack of investments hampered its operations.
The suspended executives have been accused of making false declarations regarding tonnage of mineral ores and misappropriating revenues from mineral sales. Analysts believe that the bulk of Congo's mineral exports are smuggled out of the country. Congo is Africa's largest producer of tin and cobalt.
