NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The forecast 2008-09 world sugar deficit is expected to grow from the current estimate of 7.8 million metric tons, an economist with the International Sugar Organization said Wednesday.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones) - Higher ethanol prices and lower sugar plantings will lead export demand to outstrip Brazil's sugar production in the coming crop year, said a Brazilian consultant Wednesday.

SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--Brazil coffee industry members predicted Wednesday the new coffee crop likely will be above 40 million 60-kilogram bags, and they expect the government's National Commodities Supply Corp., or Conab, to raise its earlier estimate.

SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--Robust international sugar prices are discouraging some sugar buyers, although trade remains steady, industry participants said Wednesday.

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Thailand's sugar output for the crop year that started Oct. 1 totaled 7.19 million metric tons as of May 5, with only one mill left crushing cane as the season nears an end.

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--ICE Futures U.S. sugar futures closed with healthy gains Wednesday, amid buying from both funds and speculators, traders and brokers said.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Fortis bank has revised downwards its forecast deficit for world 2009-2010 cocoa supplies to 64,000 metric tons, due to falling demand in the global economic slowdown, the bank said in its monthly commodities report.

ABIDJAN (Dow Jones)--Arrivals of cocoa beans from Ivory Coast's farms at the ports in Oct. 1 to May 3, the first 31 weeks of the 2008-09 season, are seen at 950,000 metric tons, down by 15% on the 1,115,500 tons a year earlier, according to industry estimates obtained Wednesday.

KANSAS CITY (Dow Jones)--U.S. cocoa futures closed with modest losses after a choppy day of consolidative trading, with losses kept in check by a steady dollar and a higher crude oil market.

NAIROBI (Dow Jones)--Kenya coffee prices were firm at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange weekly auction on high demand at the end of the season, an official said Wednesday.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--World coffee production in 2009-10 is set to exceed consumption by around 12.4 million 60-kilogram bags, compared with a surplus of 6.46 million bags in 2008-09, said Fortis Bank in its monthly report Wednesday.

Coffee production from Costa Rica's 2008-09 harvest through April 23 was down 15% at 1,622,744 (60-kilogram) bags, the Costa Rican Coffee Institute, or Icafe, said Wednesday.

Honduras's coffee industry has logged in contracts for 2,551,618 60-kilogram bags of coffee from the current 2008-09 crop in sales through May 4, the official Honduran Coffee Institute, or Ihcafe, said Wednesday.

ICE Futures U.S. coffee futures ended at slightly firmer levels, but overall boasted a consolidative tone for most of the session.
