India's Exports Fall 6.6% In October: Commerce Minister

(RTTNews) - India's exports fell 6.6% in October, compared to the 39% fall in May, report media, quoting Commerce Minister Anand Sharma at a press conference at New Delhi on Friday.

India's merchandise exports fell at a slower pace in October than the previous months, as global demand was picking up, he said. However, he did not give the actual export numbers.

India's exports declined 13.8% in September to $13.60 billion. In August they were down 19.4% because of the global economic crisis. Sharma was confident that exports would pick up in the January-March quarter as both domestic and overseas demands were rising. He said that exports would grow at 15% in the next fiscal and would double by 2014.

He said that the export policy announced in August yielded good results with positive responses from the 39 new markets identified for Indian exports. He added that the FDI crossed $16 billion as investors were returning to India, as the country remained an attractive destination for investment.

Sharma is leaving Friday for Geneva to attend the WTO ministerial meeting. He said that besides raising the concerns of least developed countries, India would voice its concerns about protectionism and the non-trade barriers being erected. He said that the ministerial meeting would review the progress of negotiations for the successful completion of the Doha round.
