Nigerian President In Saudi Arabia For Treating Heart Ailment

(RTTNews) - Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua is currently undergoing treatment for an acute heart ailment in a hospital in Saudi Arabia, said officials on Thursday.

Though officials did not provide any details about the president's ailment, news reports indicated that Yar'Adua is suffering from acute pericarditis, or inflammation of the lining around the heart.

Officials accompanying the Nigerian President denied reports that president Yar'Adua was seriously ill, saying that he is presently responding well to treatment. According to them, Yar'Adua was flown to Saudi Arabia for treatment after he complied of severe chest pain while returning from a mosque after offering prayers last Friday.

Yar'Adua has been suffering from a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years, and his recurring health problems have prevented him from performing a number of official duties.

This is the second time that Yar'Adua has sought treatment from hospitals in Saudi Arabia, and has been twice been flown to Germany for emergency treatment. However, the actual nature of his illness is not yet clear.

Separately, a presidential spokesman announced Thursday that Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan has taken over presidential powers until President Yar'Adua returns from Saudi Arabia.
