US May Resume Arms Sales To Taiwan 77 days ago
(RTTNews) - A top US diplomat in Taiwan said the United States plans to resume arms sales to the East Asian island country, clearing concerns in Taipei that sales had been informally suspended.
Raymond Burghardt, chairman of the de facto US embassy in Taipei, told a news conference Tuesday that Washington is evaluating a request by Taiwan for striking a $4.9 billion deal that will provide it 66 advanced F-16 jets to modernize its military.
Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 23 countries, although de-facto relations are maintained with nearly all others.
In an apparent acknowledgment of concerns by Taiwanese leaders that China has aimed at least 1,000 short-range and medium-range missiles at the island, Burghardt said "The number (of Chinese missiles) continues to grow."
He told reporters that Beijing should "remove the missiles," which he described as "as a form of threat."
Beijing, which tries to assert its control over Taiwan, opposes US arms sales to it.
