Two Officers Among Five Killed In Indian Insurgent Ambush

(RTTNews) - Five Indian paramilitary members, including an Army major and the paramilitary counterpart of an Army captain, were killed Monday in an ambush by militants suspected to belong to the outlawed United National Liberation Front (UNLF), one of the oldest underground groups of the eastern Indian state of Manipur, officials said.

A defense ministry spokesperson said heavily-armed militants of the UNLF attacked a convoy of the paramilitary 43 Assam Rifles near Old Samtol village in Chandel district bordering Myanmar, about 75 miles (120 km) south of Imphal, capital of Manipur.

He said the patrol party was ambushed while it was on an area- domination duty in a thickly-wooded area, leading to an encounter in which five security personnel, including the two officers, were killed.

Police and paramilitary troopers have since begun combing the area. The militants might have returned to bases inside Myanmar, the spokesperson said.

The two officers killed in the ambush were identified as Major Bhupinder Mehra and Raminder Kumar, the latter being an assistant commandant of Assam Rifles, equivalent to that of an Army Captain. The three slain troopers are identified as: Havildar (sergeant) B.S. Parmar, Rifleman Narayan Singh and Rifleman Ajay Kumar.

The ambush came a day ahead of the 43rd foundation day of the UNLF fighting for an "independent" Manipur for the majority Metei community in a state of 2.4 million persons.

During the past two decades, more than 10,000 persons have lost their lives to insurgency in Manipur where about 20 militant groups active with demands ranging from secession to greater autonomy.
