Obama's Second Term Hinges On Afghanistan-Pakistan: Riedel 77 days ago
(RTTNews) - Bruce Riedel, adviser to the U.S. President, said Barack Obama's next term in office depends on how he tackles the situation in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region and on preventing Pakistan from becoming a "jihadist" state.
Speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies at Israel's Tel Aviv University, the former analyst with CIA and member of the National Security Council during Bill Clinton's presidency, said Obama inherited a disaster in Afghanistan that is getting worse with each passing day.
Contending that al-Qaida and Taliban are 'winning the war' in Afghanistan, Riedel said in Afghanistan the Taliban and al-Qaida have the strategic momentum after years of American neglect.
Reidel, who was asked by U.S. President a few months ago to offer advice on the issue, also said the most important man today in al-Qaida is not Osama bin Laden but rather the elusive Taliban leader, Mullah Omar.
According to Riedel, in the coming weeks Obama will make a decision on the demands of the U.S. army commanders to send tens of thousands more troops into the war against the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan--a strategy that could decide his fate and determine whether he will win a second term in office.
If Obama fails to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan, Riedel believes, this will lead also to the collapse of neighboring Pakistan where "a weak civilian government is fighting for its survival against the Frankenstein-like monster (the Taliban and Islamist organizations like Lashkar e-Toiba) that it created."
The biggest nightmare of the Obama administration is that Pakistan, with its dozens of nuclear warheads, will turn into a jihad state.
Noting that there are already more terrorists per square kilometer in Pakistan than in any other country in the world, Riedel said a jihadist Pakistan will be the "largest terrorist state that has ever been set up," and will dwarf Libya, Iraq, Syria and Iran.
