Gaza Militants To Halt Rocket Attacks On Israel 79 days ago
(RTTNews) - Hamas, the radical Islamic group that governs the Gaza Strip, announced Saturday that it has reached an agreement with other militant groups in the besieged Palestinian territory to halt rocket attacks on Israel.
Hamas' interior minister Fathi Hammad said that the cease fire is aimed at preventing retaliatory attacks from Israel, there by allowing the residents of Gaza to recover from the damages caused by the recent three-week long Israeli offensive early this year.
Hammad said the cease-fire agreement was aimed at bringing stability to the region, but warned that it would not prevent the Gaza militants from launching future rocket attacks in case of Israeli incursions.
Although Hamas has refrained from carrying out rocket attacks on Israel after the 22-day conflict in December-January, other Palestinian militants groups have continued to launch rockets into southern Israel.
Israel had launched a 22-day offensive against the Hamas in the Gaza Strip during December, in response to continued rocket fire into southern Israel by Palestinian militants in Gaza. The three-week war was was finally halted on 17th January with separate unilateral cease-fire by Israel and Hamas.
Palestinians claim that over 1,400 civilians in the Gaza Strip were killed in the conflict, but Israeli army says its investigations revealed that only 1,116 Palestinians were killed in the three-week long offensive.
Despite Hamas' announcement, another rocket was fired from Gaza to southern Israel by Palestinian militants on Saturday. A militant faction affiliated to the al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack.
Israeli military said that the rocket exploded near the town of Sderot, without causing any casualties or damages. Israeli military responded to Saturday's rocket attack by launching an air strike on militant targets in central and northern Gaza on Sunday morning.
Israeli army officials said that at least seven Palestinians were injured in the attack, which targeted two suspected weapons factories and a a smuggling tunnel under the border with Egypt.
Israel says that some 250 such rockets have been fired into southern Israel from Gaza Strip after separate unilateral cease-fires by Israel and Hamas ended the three-week long Gaza offensive on 17th January.
Israeli security forces often target such smuggling tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border in retaliation to the rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, stating that the militants use them to smuggle arms into the Gaza Strip to launch attacks on Israeli forces.
Palestinians have been using tunnels to smuggle essential goods into the besieged Palestinian territory ever since Israel imposed a strict blockade on the Gaza Strip after Hamas came to power in the territory in June 2007, ousting the secularist Fatah party led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas.
Egypt too closed the Rafah border crossing, the only one of its kind from Gaza that bypasses Israel, after Hamas came to power two years ago. Israel and the West consider Hamas a terrorist organization over its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel
