Abdullah Turns Down Karzai's Invitation 81 days ago
(RTTNews) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai's main presidential challenger Abdullah Abdullah has rejected the former's invitation to join a unity government, saying the Afghan leader has not been able to live up to expectations at home and abroad.
Addressing a news conference after Thursday's inauguration ceremony of Karzai, Abdullah said he did not think that this government will be able to respond to the demands of the Afghan people in the future either.
"I didn't see any new idea offered by Karzai or promise made to the people or to the international community, so I would be hopeful, regardless of my own position that the situation will get better, but as far as I am concerned, my side has never been asking for posts," Abdullah was quoted as saying.
Abdullah also said that because of the failures of Karzai's government good opportunities have slipped through the hands of the Afghan people over the past eight years.
The former foreign minister made the comments after Karzai, in his inauguration speech, invited him and Ashraf Ghani, another election challenger and a former World Bank executive, to join the national unity government.
The August 20 presidential election, marred by widespread allegations of vote fraud, failed to produce a winner by the majority of the vote, resulting in a run-off between Karzai and Abdullah. Karzai was declared re-elected after Abdullah pulled out of a scheduled runoff vote, alleging possible fraud again.
