Israel Expresses Willingness To Reopen Peace Talks With Syria

(RTTNews) - Israel on Thursday expressed willingness to reopen peace talks with Syria, a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks with French President Nicholas Sarkozy in Paris.

Israeli cabinet secretary Zvi Hauser told Israel Radio on Thursday that Netanyahu has indicated that he is ready to open immediate peace talks with Syria, provided there are no preconditions.

"The prime minister said that he would be willing to immediately open negotiations with Syria, as long as the talks are held without preconditions, either from Israel or from Syria," Zvi Hauser said. "The prime minister has held a consistent line in the past few months since taking office in favor of opening talks."

Hauser's statements came a day after Netanyahu reportedly asked Sarkozy to convey his willingness to reopen peace talks to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, when the French President holds talks with the Syrian leader in Paris on Friday.

Though media reports indicated Wednesday that Netanyahu has said in the message sent to Assad though Sarkozy that Israel is willing to withdraw from the Golan Heights, they were rejected by the Israeli PM's office on Thursday.

Earlier, the governments of Israel and Syria had begun indirect talks under the mediation of Turkey in Istanbul in last May, but the negotiations were halted after Israel launched an offensive against the Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip in December.

Prior to the Turkey-mediated indirect talks, another round of peace negotiations between the two countries had broken down in 2000 over a dispute on the extent of Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day War. Syria has kept the return of Golan Heights as a non-negotiable condition for peace with Israel.
