Cambodia, Thailand Expel Diplomats 9 days ago
(RTTNews) - Diplomatic level tit-for-tat over Cambodia appointing fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as the government's economic adviser worsened Thursday, with each country expelling a top diplomat from the other country
Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong says the first secretary of the Thai Embassy, Kamrob Palawatwichai was asked to leave Phnom Pen within 48 hours for "carrying out activities inconsistent with his official duties." He refused to clarify the charge.
Panitan Wattanayakorn, acting Thai government spokesman, said it responded by asking Cambodia's first secretary in its mission in Bangkok to leave within the next 48 hours.
He said although it is a "sad matter," Bangkok was forced to retaliate as "Thailand is obliged to proceed in similar diplomatic action."
Thai government spokesman added that until now it is not necessary to close the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.
Both the countries had already recalled their ambassadors a week ago.
The diplomatic retaliations were sparked by Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni's appointment last month of Thaksin to the honorary posts of economic adviser and personal adviser to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Last Thursday, Thai Foreign Ministry announced that it is recalling Ambassador Pasas Pasasbinitchai protesting against Cambodia "interfering in Thailand's internal affairs." Cambodia recalled its ambassador to Thailand within hours.
Hun Sen stoked up tensions earlier by offering asylum to Thaksin, who is facing arrest warrant in Thailand in a number of corruption and abuse-of-power cases charged against him.
