Five Rebels Shot Dead In Chechnya: Interior Ministry

(RTTNews) - Chechnya's interior ministry says Russian security forces shot dead five rebels in a special operation near the the Caucasus republic's capital Grozny Wednesday, RIA Novosti news agency reports.

The ambush occurred near the village of Serjen-Yurt, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) east of the republic's capital, said a ministry official, adding, two of the four bodies identified were on a Russian wanted list.

The ambush came only two days after police shot dead two alleged rebel leaders in Russia's volatile southern region of Chechnya in an operation reportedly led by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

Russia's largely Muslim Northern Caucasus has been witnessing increasing violence in recent months as Islamist militants wage a low-level insurgency against the Moscow-backed local authorities. Chechnya saw two separatist wars after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.
