Lebanon's New Unity Cabinet Formed 91 days ago
(RTTNews) - Ending a five-month cabinet deadlock following the June parliamentary elections, the Lebanon's prime minister-designate Saad Hariri annunced Monday night the formation of a new national unity cabinet.
Hariri, son of Rafiq al-Hariri, the assassinated former prime minister, submitted his 30-member list of ministers to Michel Suleiman, the Lebanese President, in capital Beirut following intense negotiations with opposition leaders over the composition of the cabinet.
The team includes 15 names from Western and Saudi-backed Hariri's March 14 coalition, and 10 from the Iran-and-Syria-backed opposition parties, including two from the Shia Muslim Hezbollah movement. The remaining five, including the interior and defense portfolios, will be appointed by President Sleiman.
"Finally, the national-unity cabinet is formed," Hariri said after the meeting with President Suleiman, adding, the cabinet would be one of agreement and co-operation ensuring that the team would be equal to face challenges.
Meanwhile, Fouad Siniora, the caretaker Prime Minister, announced his resignation.
France, the Lebanon's former colonial ruler, welcomed the formation of the unity ministry, and pledged full support for Hariri.
Stating that the formation of a new cabinet was necessary to resolve the conflict that the Lebanon was facing, to assure the security and stability of the country, Bernard Kouchner, the French foreign minister, urged the new team to push through economic measures demanded by donors and implement U.N. Resolution 1701 that ended a two-month war between Hezbollah and Israeli forces in the summer of 2006.
