South Korea, DPRK Navies Clash Off West Coast 10 days ago
(RTTNews) - A Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)--as North Korea is formally known--patrol boat is reported to have been badly damaged after a clash with a South Korean warship off the western coast of the Korean Peninsula, Yonhap news agency reports.
The skirmishes broke out at 11:28 am (0228 GMT) near Daechong island when a South Korean warship reportedly fired warning shots after the North Korean patrol boat crossed the disputed Yellow Sea border Tuesday morning.
When the patrol boat ignored the warning shorts and continued sailing southwards, the South's navy opened fire at it, following which the North's boat shot back at the South Korean warship, Yonhap quoted an unnamed South Korean official who did not provide further details.
"There were no casualties on our side while the North Korean boat, half-destroyed, sailed back to the North," the official was quoted as saying.
In October, Pyongyang's navy accused South Korea of sending warships across the border to stir tensions, warning the 'reckless military provocations' could trigger armed clashes.
The disputed border in the Yellow Sea, also known as the Northern Limit Line (NLL) was the scene of fierce naval conflicts in 1999 and 2002. The NLL was drawn up unilaterally by United Nations Command forces at the end of the Korean War in 1953, but was never recognized by the North which wants it drawn further to the south.
