Iraqi Elections Put Off By Five Days, To Be Held On January 21

(RTTNews) - Iraq's Electoral Commission has announced that the country's parliamentary elections will take place on January 21, five days later than scheduled.

The postponement was due to the delay in the passage of a crucial election law, which finally came through Sunday after weeks of political wrangling.

Lawmakers agreed on a key dispute about how the vote will be conducted in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, claimed by Sunni Arabs, Turkmen and Kurds.

Kurds have long regarded Kirkuk as an integral part of Kurdistan. Many Arabs and Turkmen oppose such a move and want it under the control of Iraq's central government.

Sunday, the Iraqi lawmakers managed to compromise, agreeing that in such provinces where there were disputes over the electoral roll, the results would be provisional.

A delay in the election, which is crucial to strengthening Iraqi democracy, could have affected US plans for an early pullout by September next year.

Faraj al-Haidari, head of the Independent High Electoral Commission, said the revised polling date needed the approval of the presidency council.

There will be an increase of 48 seats from the current strength of the Council of Representatives, he added. It is in proportion to a rise in population, which will make the total number of the Iraqi MPs to 323.
