Iraqi Parliament Approves Election Law 12 days ago
(RTTNews) - Iraq's lawmakers approved a crucial election law late Sunday, required for national elections to take place in January.
Lawmakers agreed on a key dispute about how the vote will be conducted in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, claimed by Sunni Arabs, Turkmen and Kurds.
Kurds have long regarded Kirkuk as an integral part of Kurdistan. Many Arabs and Turkmens oppose such a move and want it under the control of Iraq's central government.
It was not clear if the delayed passage of the law will give Iraqi authorities enough time to hold the elections scheduled to be held on January 16.
In Washington, US President Barack Obama hailed the vote an important milestone.
