Cambodia Appoints Former Thai Premier Thaksin Shinawatra As Adviser 15 days ago
(RTTNews) - Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been appointed as economic adviser to the Cambodian government and private adviser to Prime Minister Hun Sen, officials said Wednesday.
A government spokesman said Wednesday that King Norodom Sihamoni had formally appointed Thaksin to the posts October 27 at the request of prime minister and in accordance with the country's constitution.
The appointment came almost two weeks after Hun Sen stoked up tensions with Thailand by offering safe haven to Thaksin, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and lives in self-exile in foreign countries to avoid a jail term for corruption.
Ties between Cambodia and Thailand have been strained since June 2008 amid an ongoing border conflict over land surrounding an 11th century temple, which has claimed several lives.
Reacting to the appointment, Thailand said that the appointment was an internal matter for Hun Sen's government but it would pursue the extradition of fugitive former Thai prime minister if he sets foot in Cambodia.
